John James Dower is best known for his maps The Weekly Dispatch Atlas. He contributed maps of the counties of Northern England, the Midlands and East Anglia, Italy & Switzerland, Austria & Hungary, New Zealand, and the environs of Paris. He also engraved maps for the Illustrated London News, and for atlases by G.W. Bacon.
The Weekly Despatch Atlas was published in parts between 1857 and 1863. The plates were then acquired by Cassell who published the collection as an atlas in 1863. A second edition was published in 1865. The plates were later purchased by G W Bacon, who re-issued the maps in 1876.
