The image shows an interior with a peasant man sitting back in a chair while a dentist pulls one of his teeth, a basket with eggs standing at his feet (probably the payment for the dentist), and a cabinet in the backgrouGerrit Dou, also known as Gerard Douw or Dow, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, whose small, highly polished paintings are typical of the Leiden fijnschilders. He specialised in genre scenes and is noted for his trompe-l'œil "niche" paintings and candlelit night-scenes with strong chiaroscuro.
