"The Field of Inkerman" refers to depictions of the Battle of Inkerman (November 5, 1854) during the Crimean War, and it is one of a series of prints produced by Colnaghi (Paul and Dominic Colnaghi), publishers based in London.
The images, such as The Field of Inkerman, were often based on watercolours by artist William Simpson (1823-1899) and printed around 1855. These works depicted scenes of the battlefield, including French Zouave encampments, the surrounding terrain like the Chernaya Valley, and scenes of the fighting.
Colnaghi & Co, were major publishers of art prints in London, who published "Seat of War in the East," a collection of prints documenting the Crimean War. They are still in business to this day.
The battle itself was a significant Anglo-French victory against the Russian army, characterized by heavy fog and intense close-quarters combat.
