Edward Stanford opened his business in 1853. As Britain pushed out into the world in a wave of exploration and colonisation, cartographic maps were in high demand. In 1901 after several moves the business eventually consolidated itself onLong AcrenearCovent Garden, centralLondon. It was to remain there until 1999, when the site closed.
Over the years many notable explores and travellers have used Stanford's publications to navigate around the world.David Livingstone,Robert Scott,Ernest Shackleton,Florence NightingaleandRanulph Fiennes, to mention a few.
