In 1880 Herbert Fry published "London in 1880" - a handbook for Victorian visitors. In this book, Fry offers a detailed snapshot of London in that year. The city had seen rapid growth in the 19th century due in part to the Industrial Revolution and the rising population.
The popular book ran to many editions. It provides an interesting insight into the city of London as it was in 1880. A major factor for ithe book's success was the inclusion of twenty illustrations providing: “Bird’s-eye views of the principal streets.”
This is one of those illustrations and is taken from the first edition of 1880.
Hand coloured at a later date.
