The Society of The Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was founded by Lord Brougham to further the education of the lower and middle classes. Lord brougam was an advocate of liberal policies and lobbied for the abolition of slavery. He was also responsible for establishing University College, London. He entered politics and reached the post of Lord High Chancellor in 1830, overseeing the passing of the reform Act in 1832.
The publications of the SDUK were however, not successful and the Society was wound up in 1848. However the publication rights were acquired by a succession of publishers who modified the plates with later editions.
