Morden ; Robert (1650 – 1703) Huntingdonshire. Original antique map. First impression
Is well know for his county maps of England. Together with several other maps of the British Isles they were published for Gibson's edition of Camden's Britannia, 1695.
They were the only large county maps of this period and went on to be reprinted in 1722, 1753 and 1772, long after Roberts death. The 1722 edition is identified by a watermark of a horse within a circle. Unlike the map makers of the the 17th century Morden did not decorate his maps with vignette illustrations, shields and historical anecdotes. This would be partly due to fashion but more reflective of cost. In all four editions the maps were produced uncoloured. Where a Morden map is advertised coloured this will be by hand at a latter date.
