Gardner was an engraver who worked with Charles Smith.
Charles Smith was a publisher, engraver as well as a map and globe seller working at No. 172 (Corner of Surrey Street ) Strand, London from 1803 to 1862. From 1864 he was at 63 Charing Cross. A rival of John Cary producing very similar styled detailed maps. His fine New English Atlas published in 1804 was a model for Cary's New English Atlas published five years later in 1809.
