"Nova Mappa Geographica Sueciae ac Gothiae Regna ut et Finlandiae Ducatum ac Lapponiam, cum Provinciis minoribus, ob oculos penens".
This original antique map was created by T. C. Lotter, Augsburg, ca. 1750. Orig. old colouring. Details include a heraldical title cartouche with 5 coats of arms and 3 cherubs.
This is a map of Sweden, Finland, Estonia and the St. Petersburg region created by the prominent German engraver and publisher Tobias Conrad Lotter.
The term "Vindel" is an abbreviation for Augustae Vindelicorum, the Latin name for Augsburg, Germany, where Lotter's publishing house was based.
Originally published around 1760, with later editions or variants appearing through the late 18th century.
Tobias Conrad Lotter was born in 1707and married into the mapmaking family of Matthaus Seutter. He worked for him until Seutter's death in 1757, after which he acquired some of Seutter's engraved plates.
He opened his own successful business with Seutter's plates and added his own, and he became one of the most prominent mid-18th century mapmakers in Germany. This map is likely from the Atlas Minor, and is clearly based on one of the plates acquired from Matthias Seutter, with additions and improvements as can be seen in the flamboyant engraving and the bold use of colour.
