Fontan was a French artist born in 1884. He was interested in art from an early age and intially studied art in Tours and later in Paris. To support himself he provided artwork for La Vie Parisienne and Le Sourire and designed the covers for Arsene Lupins first books. He also designed posters and created murals for the interiors of ocean going liners.
He studied under Luc-Olivier Merson, Leon Bonnat and Fernand Cormon. Fontan was established in Paris as a painter and decorative artist and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais and the Humorists' Salon.
Fontan received the Bonat Former Students' Prize in 1936, a Silver Medal and was made Chavalier of the Légion d'Honneur.
Leo Fontan died in Annec in 1965.
