Original antique map by Weigel & Schneider. A rare map of Australia, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific showing Australia lettered New Holland with Tasmania joined to the mainland thus pre-dating Bass's exploration of the area and the subsequent Bass's Strait. First published in Nuremberg in 1792. This is the third revised edition published in 1796.
The map includes extensive annotations on the known coastlines of Australia, including the names and dates of a number of early Dutch explorers from the 17th Century.
The map shows tracks of Abel Tasman (1644) and Captains Cook (1769, 1770, 1771, 1773, 1774, 1779), Furneaux (1773), Wallis (1767), Byron (1765), Marshall (1764), Bouganville (1769) Shortland (1788), Duncan & Scarborough, along with the discoveries of a number of islands.
Korea is shown with a curious shape and the Meerbusen von Korea (Sea of Korea) is shown. Nice detail in New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the Philippines.
This third edition from 1796 and a state privilege, which had not yet been granted at the time of the printing of the first state of the map.
Some damage and repairs to the left and right margins.
Early hand colouring, but faded in places.
