Original antique map by Johann Baptist Homann. Published in 1743 Old, possibly original, hand colouring.
The map shows in detail the coast of Guinea, and a large part of Lower and Southern Ethiopia (listed as the 'modern' name given by contemporary geographers for that country) with a large vignette at the bottom right depicting a village scene.
The geographical information was taken from the voyage of the Chevalier de Marchais, interpreted by M. d'Anville and engraved “according to the new projection of the late Professor Has”, by the Homann Heirs publishing company.
Homann Heirs were a map publishing company based in Nuremburg, Germany from the middle to late 18th century. After the death of the great mapmaker Johann Homann in 1724, ownership of his company passed to his son Johann Christoph. Following his death shortly after, it passed to the two managers of the company and all maps published thereafter featured the name "Homann Heirs". This occurs from 1731 until the last map was published in 1848.
Renaud Marchais, known as the Chevalier des Marchais, was a French explorer who undertook several voyages between Africa and the Americas between 1704 and 1727.
