Ernst Georg Ravenstein, a British/German geographer and statistician, was best known for his "Laws of Migration" and his estimate of population growth leading to a critical point in 2072 when the population could not be sustained. His estimate of 5.994 Billion was reached around 1998.
He is also referenced as a pioneer in thematic and statistical mapping in "Milestones in the History of Thematic Cartography, Statistical Graphics and Data Visualization". Today he might be known as a "data analyst". He produced some atlases, and a large number of thematic maps (some of them geological) of various areas including Ireland, New Zealand, Turkey and Africa, including one illustrating the travels of Marco Polo.
His maps were renowned for cartographic rigour, and as excellent syntheses of the latest available data from multiple sources.
