Samuel Dunn's map of the World is adorned with a wealth of information. It was a very popular map in the late eighteenth century and was revised several times as new discoveries were made, This example was published by Robert Sayer in 1772.

Captain Cooks first voyage to the Pacific was to observe and record the transit of Venus in 1769.
He was selected by the Royal Society and the Admiralty for his skills in mathematics and instrumentation. But he was also instructed to search out new worlds and following his observations of the transit of Venus he sailed south charting the Islands of New Zealand and the east coast of Australia. On board at the time was the naturalist Joseph Banks who went onto record Australia's many natural curiosities.
