Levasseur was an important engineer, cartographer and engraver who held a number of posts in the French Government. he is most well known for his "Atlas Nationale Illustre des 86 Departments et Possessions de la France."
His maps are decorated with various illustrations showing various aspects of the area, including wild life, trade and famous citizens.
