William Home Lizars was born and educated in Edinburgh in 1788. He was apprenticed to his father, Daniel Lizars, from whom he learnt engraving, after which he entered the Trustees’ Academy to learn under John Graham.
Following his father's death, he took over the family business of engraving and copperplate printing.
