Bleau ; Willem Janszoon. Huntingdonshire - huntingdonensis comitatus. Original antique map published for Atlas Novus, 1645, Dutch Edition with text on verso.
Published during the English civil war Bleau maps of English and Welsh counties were larger and less cluttered than those published earlier by English cartographers. The maps though were still decorative with cartouches which relate to the pursuits, costumes and the industry of the county. Heraldic shields of local notable figures of the county were included. Bleau did use Speed and Saxton for the information but the maps by Bleau are distinctive in there own right. The typography is sharp and distinctive. The calligraphy rich with clean impressions. To achieve this the finest paper was used and this is evident today. If they have been cared for Bleau maps can be as distinctive now as when first published nearly 500 years ago.
