"Plan of the Camp of the Army of the Allies, commanded by Monsr. D'Auverquerque, and the manner in which it was drawn up in battle, when the Army of the Two Crowns advanced to Attack It May 14 1703."
Original antique map published in 1751 by Mr Tindal, and forming part of the"Continuation of Mr Rapin's History of England".
The 18th-century map depicts the Allied army's camp and battle formation under Monsieur D'Auverquerque during the War of the Spanish Succession. It shows the strategic layout near Maastricht as they prepared for a potential attack by the "Army of the Two Crowns" (French and Spanish forces).
The Allied forces were commanded by Field Marshal Henry of Nassau, Lord of Auverquerque and relates to the Battle of Maastricht, where the French/Spanish forces (Army of the Two Crowns) threatened the Allied positions. It serves as a historical document of 18th-century military engineering and battlefield organization.
The map relates to the area around Maastricht in the Netherlands.
Paul Rapin de Thoyras was a Huguenot historian under English patronage. He compiled a French-language history of England, published in 1724-27. It was published monthly with illustrations. All volumes of his work were translated to English in 14 volumes from 1727 by the Reverend Nicolas Tindal. Tindal also added a "Continuation" to the History, covering the years from the accession of James VI to that of George I of Great Britain.
The original version was almost the only English history available in France in the first half of the 18th century.
