Fine example of John Senexs map of America. The map is curious for several reasons. Unlike most maps of the period, Senex adds a conjectural Northwest Coastline, which includes a number of islands and several lakes, including Aquinonbock, Lake of Isles and the The Great Lake of Thoago or Thoya. On the coastline, Desolation and Zapozipin Bays appear north of 60 degrees.
Two other curious features include the odd unnamed river with its headwaters in the Florida panhandle and the unique shape of South America.
This is also one of the few English Language maps to show California as an island.View Item

This rare and unusual map of the Americas features California as an island. The western coastline stretches far to the northwest with several inventive place names (Desolation and Zapozipin) and imaginary islands along the coastline. This remarkable coastline looks very much like the early depictions of Alaska after the Russian and Cook explorations in the latter part of the eighteenth century. In the West are three spurious lakes - L. Aquinanbock and L. of Isles and a huge lake labelled The Great Lake of Thongo or Thoya. These lakes all show possible rivers flowing from them into the Pacific denoted as dotted lines.
The mythical Parime Lake is prominently shown in South America where there is a surprising amount of detail and numerous place names.View Item
