In 1737 there were 7000 retailers of gin in London (not including the city). The first licencing act was enacted this year to curtail the distribution of gin.
Drinking beer was encouraged to drive out the madness and poverty caused by the consumption of gin. Beer was considered healthy and created a joyous population.
