Original antique woodcut engraving
Drawn by D.H. Prior
Published by C. Evans as special supplement for the Pictorial Times, 1845

In 1843 Henry Vizetelly, with his elder brother James Thomas and with Andrew Spottiswoode, started the Pictorial Times, in competition with the Illustrated London News. Determined to outdo its competitor, handbills were distributed at the end of 1844 announcing the imminent publication "for all persons, the largest engraving in the world, the Grand Panorama of London from the Thames, fourteen feet in length!"

The panorama appeared on 11 January, 1845. It was divided into four sections on a sheet measuring 31.5 inches by 42.5 inches. The view extended from the Western Stone Wharf, just to the west of Parliament, to the Belfast, Cork, Leith and Glasgow Steam Wharf, just to the east of St. Katherines Dock.

It Illustrates all the riverside buildings, along with a great variety of river craft. The Hungerford Suspension Bridge is shown under construction.
